Size
The size of a tree squirrel varies greatly, but generally a gray squirrel is bigger than a red squirrel. The red squirrel, for example, is the smallest species, only reaching four inches in length when full grown. The eastern fox squirrel, on the other hand, can reach up to 20 inches long and a tail length of 15 inches, weighing as much as two pounds on average. The size of a tree squirrel also depends on where you live.
Red squirrels are smaller than gray squirrels, and have bushy tails that are nearly as long as their bodies. Red squirrels are also half the size of gray squirrels, and their fur is reddish brown in summer and greyer in winter. Their undersides are white. Both males and females are equal in size, and live throughout the northern United States and parts of Canada. They are also found south of the Appalachian Mountains and into the southwestern United States, from New Mexico to Arizona.
Weight
The weight of a tree squirrel can vary depending on the species. A grey squirrel will weigh anywhere from four to seven pounds and can grow up to two feet long. Red squirrels, on the other hand, are much smaller and only grow about four inches long when fully grown. A red squirrel can also weigh a little more than a pound. The average weight of a tree squirrel is about sixteen to twenty four ounces, so a red squirrel is not much bigger than a gray or eastern grey.
A red and white giant flying squirrel is a common sight in Southeast Asia, and weighs seven pounds! It has a long tail and can grow up to one foot long, making it the world’s biggest flying squirrel! It lives in jungles and mountaintops, where it eats nuts, acorns, and fruit. Although they are small, they are very powerful. If you have an arachnophobia problem, you might want to consider a pet squirrel.
Habitat
The red-bellied tree squirrel, also called Mexican gray squirrel, is a species of squirrel that lives in forests throughout Mexico and Guatemala. These squirrels make use of several nesting methods, including leaf-and-stick nests, cavity nests, and ground nests. The majority of the squirrel’s habitat is in trees. This is largely due to the fact that they prefer large trees with high percentages of canopy cover.
Female tree squirrels mate when they are one year old. Female tree squirrels produce litters of two to four young each year. The gestation period is typically 29 days, although smaller squirrels may have shorter gestation periods. Kits are born blind and dependent on their mother for the first two or three months, and the young are weaned at six weeks old. The females of this species usually breed during the early spring and late summer, depending on where they live.
Reproductive habits
The reproductive habits of tree squirrels vary from species to species, but they all share two distinct mating seasons, each lasting between five and eight days. Female squirrels produce a scent prior to mating that attracts male squirrels. As mating season approaches, groups of male squirrels may converge on the female, leading to long and intense fights and chases through the forest. In some species, only one litter is produced per year.
Females mature into sexually mature adults after a mating period of about four to five months. Their territorial behavior changes to attract males. During this time, females release a scent that attracts males, and males will abandon their usual routines to chase after a fertile female. Males compete with females for dominance and maturity, and older males are usually the winner. Females do not take part in raising the young, but will mat with males they recognize.
Diet
If you have a tree in your backyard, then you’ve likely tempted a squirrel by leaving out food. Squirrels love to eat and you’ve likely fed them at least once. However, some foods don’t provide much nutritional value and can even harm their digestive system. Avoid giving your squirrels anything with a high starch content. Foods like breakfast cereals, oats, and potatoes can easily cause digestive upset.
A red squirrel’s diet is unique. This is because it is able to digest high-energy tree fruits and seeds. It also has the ability to digest leaves and stems. However, its diet is rich in fat and contains a lot of phosphate, which inhibits calcium absorption. Peanuts can also cause metabolic bone disease if consumed in excess. Hence, it is important to avoid giving your pet too much peanuts.
